RACE REPORT | F1 Hungary 2024

Oscar Piastri of the McLaren team at the Hungaroring scored his first Formula 1 victory. Lando Norris confirmed McLaren's dominance with second place.

Saturday's qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix was dominated by McLaren cars, with Lando Norris taking pole position and Oscar Piastri finishing second. Max Verstappen had to settle for third place this time.

However, Piastri had the best start of the race, taking the top spot immediately. Verstappen took second place - but he went off the track, leaving Norris behind him.

After the first few laps, the order was settled: Piastri led ahead of Norris and Verstappen.

The first series of pit stops took place from lap 19. The McLaren drivers stopped earlier than Verstappen, which helped them to maintain their lead.

Verstappen dropped behind Hamilton to fourth due to the postponement of the first stop.

The standings after the halfway point of the race were as follows: Piastri continued to hold the top position ahead of Norris, with Hamilton running third ahead of Verstappen.

Norris made his last pit stop on lap 46 (out of 70), while Piastri did not pit until two laps later. The Briton got ahead of the Aussie.

After the second stop, Verstappen dropped behind Leclerc, but he was able to handle him.

As the laps ticked down, McLaren began to put pressure on Norris to give Piastri back the position he had gained in the pits. Norris didn't want to do too much, but he eventually relinquished the top spot.

This allowed Piastri to drive to his first career F1 win.

Meanwhile, there was one more change. On lap 63, Verstappen attacked Hamilton but was unsuccessful as contact was made between them.

The cars were not damaged, but Verstappen dropped to fifth place, which he retained, while Hamilton defended third.
